2026 Michigan Minimum Wage & Tipped Rules
In Michigan, the state minimum wage is reviewed annually and adjusted based on the inflation rate (unless the unemployment rate is high, which pauses the increase). The standard minimum wage in Michigan for 2026 is projected to be $10.56 per hour.
Michigan has a unique rule for hospitality and service workers: the tipped minimum wage is set at exactly 38% of the regular minimum wage. This means if the minimum wage is $10.56, the minimum cash wage an employer can pay a server is $4.01 per hour. If the $4.01 plus your tips does not average out to $10.56 per hour, the employer must legally make up the difference.
The 40-Hour Rule
Like the federal FLSA, Michigan law requires employers to pay overtime compensation at a rate of 1.5 times the regular rate for any hours worked exceeding 40 in a single continuous workweek. Michigan does not have a daily overtime rule. Working a 12-hour shift on Monday does not automatically grant you overtime pay. If your shifts are scattered, use our weekly time card calculator to track your exact 40-hour threshold.
How to Calculate Overtime with Shift Differentials (Night Shifts)
This is the most common form of wage theft in Michigan's massive manufacturing (automotive) and healthcare sectors. Many workers receive a Shift Differentialโan extra few dollars per hour for working the graveyard shift, weekends, or holidays.
"When calculating your 1.5x overtime rate, your employer CANNOT just multiply your base daytime rate by 1.5. The FLSA requires them to include your shift differential into your 'Regular Rate' using a weighted average."
Example: You work 44 total hours. Your base rate is $16/hr. However, 20 of those hours were night shifts where you earned an extra $2/hr (Total $18/hr).
| Calculation Step | Formula / Amount |
|---|---|
| Total Straight-Time Pay | (24 hrs ร $16) + (20 hrs ร $18) = $744.00 |
| Weighted Regular Rate | $744 รท 44 total hours = $16.91 / hr |
| Overtime Premium (0.5x) | $16.91 ร 0.5 = $8.45 / hr |
| Total Paycheck | $744 + (4 OT hrs ร $8.45) = $777.80 |
If your paycheck says your overtime rate was only $24.00/hr ($16 base ร 1.5), your employer is breaking the law and owes you back pay. Use the Shift Differential boxes in our calculator aboveโwe automatically run this complex weighted average math for you!
