How to calculate holiday entitlement Ireland

The Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 sets out the statutory minimum for paid holidays. There are 3 different methods for calculation, but for most part-time workers, the "8% rule" is the most relevant.

Method 1: The "8% Rule" (For Part-Time)

This is the most common method for calculating part time holiday entitlement. You earn annual leave equivalent to 8% of the hours you have worked in the leave year (April to March), subject to a maximum of 4 working weeks.

Formula: Total Hours Worked × 0.08 = Holiday Hours Earned.

Method 2: The "1360 Hours" Threshold

If you have worked at least 1,360 hours in the leave year, you are automatically entitled to the full statutory minimum of 4 working weeks, regardless of the 8% calculation.

Common Questions

What is the HSE annual leave calculator?

Employees of the HSE (Health Service Executive) often have annual leave entitlements that exceed the statutory minimum, based on their grade and length of service. This tool calculates the statutory minimum guaranteed by law. HSE staff should check their specific contract or internal HR portal for enhanced rates.

Does this include Bank Holidays?

No. Annual leave (holiday entitlement) and Public Holiday (Bank Holiday) benefits are separate legal entitlements in Ireland. You can check your bank holiday pay using our separate calculator.

When is the annual leave year?

The statutory annual leave year in Ireland runs from 1st April to 31st March. However, many companies operate on a calendar year (Jan-Dec) basis. Check your employment contract to be sure.
