Bi-Weekly vs. Semi-Monthly: What's the difference?
This is a common source of confusion for employees. The key difference is the frequency of the paycheck:
- Bi-Weekly (This Calculator): You are paid every two weeks (e.g., every other Friday). This results in 26 paychecks per year. There are two months in the year where you will receive 3 paychecks.
- Semi-Monthly: You are paid twice a month (usually the 15th and 30th). This results in 24 paychecks per year. The paychecks are slightly larger, but less frequent.
Overtime Rules for Bi-Weekly Pay
It is important to note that under federal FLSA laws, overtime is calculated on a weekly basis, not averaged over two weeks.
For example, if you work 50 hours in Week 1 and 30 hours in Week 2 (Total 80 hours), you are still owed 10 hours of overtime pay for Week 1. You cannot "borrow" hours from Week 2 to offset the overtime in Week 1.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How many hours is a full-time bi-weekly check?
A standard full-time schedule is 40 hours per week, so a bi-weekly paycheck typically covers 80 hours.
2. Can I use this for Semi-Monthly pay?
Technically yes, if your pay period aligns exactly with 14 days. However, semi-monthly periods vary in length (15 or 16 days), so you might need to add an extra day mentally or use a custom template.
3. How do I print my 2-week timesheet?
